Description of the research topic:

As smart machines become more and more an integral part of our everyday life, so does the need to research ways to communicate with them. The relationship between machines and their users can be thought of as a social contract, where the precise rules of this system are not yet known, and sometimes it also need to be fully developed. The aim is to create an exchange of information that is as natural and efficient as possible for humans.

During interactions, the machine must put the gesture it is about to perform in the context of the situation. In the case of robots belonging to the family of intelligent machines mentioned above, we can distinguish two major directions according to the interaction. These two directions are social robotics and robots for industrial automation, both of which are currently the subject of intense research. The study and design of such interactions requires multidisciplinary knowledge, involving not only artificial intelligence but also product design, cognitive sciences, social psychology, etc.

The objective of the research topic is to study and develop interactions between humans and machines, based on methods from cognitive psychology and its related disciplines. A further objective is to investigate the use of artificial intelligence methods in this field, including methods for the evaluation of the interactions and in the development of (new) interaction methods.
