Description of the research topic:

"Biodiversity exploration has never been so important as it is today, because the Earth's biota experiences the 6th mass extinction event due to human activity. In parallel with this, taxonomist, who describe, name and classify species, are becoming less and less.
Here we provide an opportunity to experience the greatest experience in biology, the description of new species. You can be part of the few thousand taxonomists, who document the biodiversity. The current subject targets the land snail fauna of a small tropical island, New Caledonia. More precisely, the diverse family of Diplommatinidae. An ongoing project of the Natural History Museum of Paris (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle) have been organizing expeditions to collect the land snails of New Caledonia, as much as possible.
In the last four years we have collected an extensive amount of material, and three expeditions are planned until 2024. The collected specimens have to be examined by means of classical morphology-based taxonomy and molecular phylogeny, in order to get to know all species. The new species have to be described to make them identifiable. Our preliminary results showed that dozens of new species await descriptions.
The PhD student enrolled in this program has to learn become an expert of the family Diplommatinidae by means of morphology-based taxonomy, to make correct taxonomic decisions, making and analysing phylograms using molecular data. Statistical methods can be also used form morphometric studies.
We welcome a PhD student, who would be capable of sitting in front of the computer every day, and meticulously compare specimens for many hours, days and months. The expert knowledge in English is very important, although knowledge of other languages (German, French) would help understanding taxonomic literature."
