Description of the research topic:

Fungal infections are still a problem to be solved in the agricultural wheat production as it leads to loss of yields and fungal toxins contamination. One of the causes of the disease is the fungus Fusarium graminearum, which, with its presence, reproduction and toxin production, causes stress in the host plant. Among the elements of response, plant detoxification is of high importance, as detoxification of the toxins produced by the fungus is an essential part of successful defence. But besides the Fusarium toxins, a number of toxic molecules can also be formed within the plant, which is also eliminated by plant detoxification enzymes. The action of these enzymes is under light-dependent regulation, making them less active at night. In our work, we aim to compensate this night-time decrease with a short (15–30 min) night illumination and to follow the changes in detoxification under the influence of light and the effect of this on the defence against Fusarium graminearum.
