Description of the research topic:

Biological nitrogen fixation naturally contributes to the nitrogen supply of living organisms and also plays a significant role in sustainable agriculture. Nitrogen-fixing symbiosis is a very special form of coexistence that occurs between leguminous plants and Rhizobium bacteria in a newly formed plant organ, the root nodule. Its initiation, development, and subsequent functioning are based on the production and recognition of a number of specific signaling molecules, many (though presumably not all) of which signaling and effector pathways are already known, but the relationships between them are yet to be explored. In our research group, we also identified several plant genes in Medicago that are essential for the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules, the entry of Rhizobium bacteria, such as e.g. a gene encoding an early receptor molecule, two important genes required for bacterial infection, and so on. We study the regulatory processes of these plant genes and the function and interaction of the proteins encoded by them using modern molecular biology and biotechnology methods. In addition, using the existing Medicago mutant park, we are also looking for “missing links,” that is, additional symbiotic genes. The topic of the PhD student is developed in a discussion, taking into account the ongoing research activities in the lab and the student's ideas.
