Role of hypusination in boosting of plant salt stress tolerance

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
biology
Doctoral School of Biology

Thesis supervisor: Ágnes Szepesi
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Department of Plant Biology, Institute of Biology, Faculty of Science and Informatics, University of Szeged
Abbreviation of location of studies: SZTE

Description of the research topic:

Hypusination is a conserved polyamines-dependent posttranslational modification of eIF5A translation elongation factor, which is only found in this protein. The biosynthesis of hypusine occurs by activity of two enzymes. The involvement of hypusination was examined in some physiological processes in plants, however its precise role of hypusination is not well understood. Our applied organisms are Arabidopsis thaliana and tomato, Solanum lycopersicum.
During research, there will be opportunity to compare hypusination processes of plant species with different salt stress tolerance, decipher those elements of hypusination by pharmacological approaches and biochemical and molecular biological assays which could be useful to boost the plant salt tolerance by hypusination.

Required language skills: English or German
Further requirements:
experience in microbiology or biochemistry related plant biology, essential understanding of plant stress biology, essential practical experience with plant stress physiology assays

Number of students who can be accepted: 2

Deadline for application: 2022-12-31
