Description of the research topic:

The environmental sustainability of economic growth has been debated for 50 years since the “Limits to growth” report of the Club of Rome. The intensity of the academic and public debate has changed significantly over time. After much early attention, the topic has received renewed interest in recent years, with contributions from famous researchers and public figures. Nevertheless, questioning economic growth has not yet become a part of the discourse in mainstream economics and politics, which is considered to be very risky by a growing number of analysts. To shape such discourses, first they must be understood. Who participates in these discussions and why? What arguments and normative standpoints appear? To what extent is scientific integrity compromised by the silence of the proponents of the paradigm, and why do they not respond to criticism? The doctoral research consists of the systematic analysis of the scientific literature and public debates, as well as the interpretations of these debates. Its goal is to identify the main problems of these debates, thereby catalysing their solution.
