Description of the research topic:

Since the 1950s, productivity growth has mainly been translated to higher consumption, and not lower working time. This is especially true for the post-1980 period, when the gradual reduction of working time slowed down, stopped, or even reversed in several rich countries. However, today the paradigm of economic growth is increasingly questionable from an environmental, social, and even an economic point of view. The doctoral topic advertised as part of the work of the MTA-ELTE Lendület New Vision Research Group focuses on the social struggles around working time and their results. Which working time reduction schemes have succeeded and which ones have failed in Europe since the 1900s? How did the chances of specific types of reductions – individual or collective, compensated or uncompensated, etc. – change over time? Who fought for these schemes and who fought against them? The doctoral project seeks to answer these questions by conducting literature review, discourse analysis and a wide-ranging investigation of current working time reduction efforts.
