Thesis supervisor: Sargis Ter-Avetisyan
Location of studies (in Hungarian): U Szeged, ELI-ALPS
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELI

Description of the research topic:

The development of laser systems at ELI-ALPS has led to an increase of average power of the laser beam to > PW and to laser pulses with ultra-short duration (few laser cycles). The intensity of such a laser beam can become relativistic after focusing. Thus, an entirely New Plasma Regimes - Highly Relativistic Plasmas will be generated where ultrafast ionisation takes place, electrons are strongly relativistic, radiation pressure dominates hydrodynamics, and generated large magnetic and electric fields govern the plasma processes. The laser ponderomotive force exerts electron-ion displacement and thus generated space-charge field results in ion acceleration, accompanied with radiation processes (coherent ultrashort x-ray and gamma sources) and nuclear processes (neutrons and nuclear activations).
The aim of investigations is to build the scientific foundation for development of laser-particle accelerators, to expand the fundamental understanding of matter at very short and high intensity irradiation conditions and its dynamics. To study the scientific issues associated with energy confinement, heating, energy transport and stability which will be the benchmark for theoretical and computational models. Additionally, to show how to scale the particle accelerators to those required by the applications (like radiation protection, material sciences, etc.).
