Description of the research topic:

As tourism is not included as an independent economic sector in national economic statistics, measuring its performance is problematic. The purpose of compiling Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA), which show the economic contribution of tourism, is to represent how tourism is developing and how much it contributes directly to economic performance. Hungary has been compiling TSA statistics from the outset, but these statements do not include two important aggregates, the direct gross value added of tourism (TDGVA) and the direct contribution of tourism-specific industries to gross domestic product (TDGDP).
In addition, some of the data sources and data collections recommended by the TSA are not available in Hungary, so tourism as a part of economic activity is partly invisible to Hungarian TSA statistics.
The role of tourism is especially important in the local economy, see Lake Balaton or a spa town, like Hajdúszoboszló, or the capital city Budapest, where the majority of the tourist demand is concentrated in Hungary. Although it is not ruled out by the TSA methodology, there have been few relevant attempts to compile a regional tourism satellite account.
