Description of the research topic:

"
As the energy demand of the world has been continuously increasing, new technologies are required in the field of energy economy. Although the utilization of renewable energy sources has been developing rapidly in recent years, the fraction of produced energy based on these renewable sources is still small. Hydrogen appears to be a suitable energy storage media with its outstanding chemical energy per unit mass and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless the difficulty of efficient hydrogen storage is still a substantial obstacle in the way of wide range applications. Solid state hydrogen storage has been drawn significant attention in the past few years due to their remarkable volumetric and gravimetric capacities.

It this research the candidate will use different sample preparation methods based on severe plastic deformation in order to synthesize novel non-equilibrium amorphous and nanocrystalline materials with outstanding H-storage properties. He/she will carry out state-of-the art microstructural, morphological and thermal characterization of these systems and will obtain correlation between the sturcural and hydrogenation performance of these materials. Hopefully, by the end of the PhD work, a collaboration with an industrial partner will be set up.
