Description of the research topic:

According to the “embodiment hypothesis” prevalent in cognitive linguistics, the conceptual system and linguistic structures are highly metaphorical, and they are largely based on physical, embodied experience. However, many studies have also pointed to the fundamental role of the cultural factor in conceptualization. The proposed research theme narrows the scope of the issue of embodiment to the examination of body-parts (i.e. “embodiment via body-parts”), and its standpoint is that cultural communities tend to use the experience of the human body as a primary source for conceptualizing abstract domains such as COGNITION, EMOTIONS, MORALITY, RESPECT, POWER or INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS. The aim of the research is to explore to what extent the figurative extension of body-parts is universal or culturally and historically embedded.
