Description of the research topic:

Arabic sources form a considerable part of the source material relevant to the peoples, languages, states and cultures of the Southeast Asian region. The precise identification of the varied terminology deriving from the languages of the region (e.g. ethnonyms, toponyms, termini technici of various disciplines, etc.) is a difficult task requiring wide-ranging linguistic competence and made all the more complex by the specificities of Arabic script and the manuscript tradition. The research project is concerned with the philological analysis of this type of source material within the wider framework of the regions’s general cultural and historical contexts.

Required language skills: arab, indonéz
Recommended language skills (in Hungarian): francia, német, kínai, japán
