Történeti kötődése a matematikához van, későbbi kiterjesztései a közgazdaságtudományban, pszichológiában, politikatudományban, biológiában, etológiában, computer tudományokban figyelhetők meg. Manapság az entitások elemzéseivel a modellek a morálfilozófiát és a pedagógiát is gazdagítják.
