Description of the research topic:

Organocatalysis is a relatively new and popular field within the domain of enantioselective synthesis. It can be interpreted as the chemical processes in which the small metal free molecules are active and catalyse organic reactions. Asymmetric organocatalysis as a special case of organocatalysis operates with chiral organic molecules.
Thioureas and squaramides, respectively bearing two N-H groups, acting as double hydrogen bonding donors, consequently became two of the most promising moieties that constitute the chiral organocatalysts. In fact, a variety of thiourea- and squaramide-based catalysts have been developed and successfully applied in a number of stereoselective reactions.
In recent years cinchona-derivatives found frequent applications in the design of various asymmetric organocatalysts, since cinchona structures are an attractive platform for catalyst development, particularly in the light of their bifunctional and chiral characteristic.
In our research group new successful organocatalyts containing cinchona skeleton and thiourea or squaramide unit, respectively, were synthesized. Our aim is to develop these catalysts, and asymmetric reactions (for instance Michael additions, aldol reactions), as well, and to find possible ways to recycle these catalysts. Different immobilization methods applying various of solid supports will be compared during the PhD programme.
