Description of the research topic:

In recent years, PCH-based diones proved to be particularly useful species for their interesting optoelectronic properties and application in organic electronics, and they have also found applications as valuable precursors to other π-extended derivatives with various substitution pattern. However, their synthesis relies nearly exclusively on the intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation of terphenyl-type dicarboxylic acid derivatives and Sn-mediated reductive aromatization/dearomatization techniques, which provide limitations for specific electron rich targets.
The aims of the project are to establish new, efficient synthetic strategies to fused polycyclic ketones or diones (which have not been accessible through the known general chemical transformations) leading to a new group of quinoidal structures bearing indenofluorenes with improved optoelectronic properties and electrochemistry; and to develop a unique ring transformation methodology of fused heterocyclic ketones, which approach could afford extended π-systems comprising indene- and indenofluorene analogons based on pyrrole or thiophene frameworks.
The overall goal of the project is to extend the scope of valuable conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons, focused on molecules based on/or inspired by the indenofluorene skeleton.
