Description of the research topic:

The application of composite membranes becomes increasingly excessive in environmental science and technology. In the planned research, layered materials, specifically graphene oxide (GO) are employed as novel components of the active layers of membranes, which offers a conceptionally different strategic approach for the improvement of molecular selectivity of filtration. We plan to deposit either paper-like micrometer thick particle layers over polymer-based supports, or hybrid lamella/polymer multilayers the thickness of which is controllable at the nanoscale. The latter can be realized by the layer-by-layer method. Finally, we will study the nanofiltration performance of the ultrathin coatings towards a wide range of test molecules that bear importance in environmental aqueous systems. Our final goal is to establish structure-selectivity relationship(s) via which membranes of plannable structure can be developed for substrate specific environmental nanofiltration.
