A Balkán évezredek óta tranzit terület. Elsősorban a délkelet-északnyugati tengely mentén a népek országútja. A 2015-ös migrációs válság rámutatott arra, hogy ez nem csupán történeti szempontból érdekes, hanem a jelent és a jövőt is alapvetően határozza meg.
