Description of the research topic:
Inland excess water is a common problem in many regions with low relief energy and with high precipitation and low infiltration. To study the problem from a scientific point of view and to prevent or mitigate the floods from an operative approach, it is important that accurate information is available about the location, extent and duration of the inundations. Continuous local measurements are not only time consuming and expensive, they also proved to be inaccurate. Satellite based identification of inland excess water has the potential to provide accurate inexpensive up-to-date information, but has several technical and operational limitations, e.g. low revisiting interval, low resolution and limited availability of high-quality data due to atmospheric disturbances.
By combining remote sensing data from different sources (Landsat, Sentinel 1, Sentinel 2, …) it is possible to overcome these problems and to create high resolution accurate inland excess water maps with a high temporal interval. Automation of the integrated GIS – RS data processing workflow is required.
