It presents the connection between the modernization of the civil state and the freedom of thought and religion in the Hungarian political culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Furthermore, it deals with the specific question of Hungarian modernization in point of the church affairs, concerning particularly three fields: the so called state ecclesiastical law, the issue of ecclesiastical autonomy and the legal support and practical emergence of the denominational equailty.
