Description of the research topic:

Natural and semi-natural areas provide a wide range of ecosystem services, which contribute to the well-being of local communities. The number of related natural and social science research projects has been increasing in recent years and their results are becoming important inputs for biodiversity and agricultural policies at different scales as well. The focus of this research is the mapping and assessment of ecosystem services related to natural and semi-natural areas (e.g. wetlands) using natural and social science research methods, as well as GIS techniques. Involvement of the local land users in the evaluation is also an important element, which can be aided by available toolkits such as TESSA (Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment). TESSA is designed to assist stakeholders to identify the most important ecosystem services and evaluate benefits people obtain from using them related to the current and alternative land uses. It can be based on existing data or new field data as well. The results of the assessment - besides having a scientific value - can also assist decision making processes on land use planning at local community level.
