Description of the research topic:

Cytokines play important roles in the innate and adaptive immune responses during the course of infections. We have demonstrated that various viruses (Sendai virus, vesicular stomatitis virus), bacteria (Staphylococci) and synthetic cytokine inducers (imiquimod) modulate cytokine production in different ways. We have revealed that certain cytokines activate phagocytes and thereby facilitate the killing and elimination of pathogens. Our present goal is to identify the processes and mechanisms implicated in the intracellular survival of various bacteria and viruses.
Cell death subroutines play important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Investigation of the features and mechanism of cell demise is of pivotal importance in order to better understand the various disease symptoms and to explore new therapeutic options. We have investigated the effects of rubella virus and herpes simplex virus on apoptosis and autophagy. Our data have suggested that the cytopathogenicity of these viruses is implicated in the development of infections and congenital malformations. We have revealed that bacteria, such as the Propionibacterium acnes also modulate the cellular autophagic process. The pro-autophagic effect of Propionibacterium acnes represents a beneficial mechanism responsible for the maintenance of cutaneous homeostasis. Our present goal is to characterize the cell death subroutines triggered by various bacteria and viruses and to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms.
