Description of the research topic:

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common illness worldwide. The high prevalence, the incompletely known pathophisiologic background and the therapeutic difficulties burden the medical service. The high direct medical costs and the absence from work induce also great financial load on the society. As we have significant data on the prevalence of this disease in many regions worldwide, Central European data are almost completely missing. Studies on our regional population provide valuable new data on the epidemiology of irritable bowel syndrome.
