Description of the research topic:

Nanostructured amphiphilic polymer conetworks, composed of otherwise immiscible covalently linked hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer chains, and their nanophase separated gels belong to a new class of cross-linked polymers. These materials have several unique properties, including selective swelling of one of the nanophases. Utilizing this unique property, hybrid materials which have not been existed before can be prepared by carrying out chemical reactions leading to metal, metal oxide or salt nanoparticles in the hydrophilic phase as nanoreactor. The PhD research project aims at investigating the fundamentals of the effect of reaction conditions on the formation of nanoparticles by reduction or salt formation in the nanoconfined hydrophilic phases, on the one hand. On the other hand, the structure-property investigations of the resulting materials will be important parts of this project. The structure of the nanophases and the nanohybrids will be investigated mainly by AFM and TEM. Nanoparticle formation of several metals, such as copper, silver and gold, will be investigated in the hydrophilic nanophases of conetworks based on a biocompatible polymers, for instance, poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide). The catalytic activity of such nanohybrids will be investigated for environmentally important reactions, such as reduction of toxic substituted phenols, and for reactions having especially pharmaceutical importance, on the basis of expectations that such nanohybrids can be used in the form of films repeatedly for many times.
