Description of the research topic:

Problem statement
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are broadly used today in a large field of applications, their revolutionized the lighting industry: new players entered the arena and traditional light source manufacturers had to follow a strong transformation path. In terms of final LED based lighting products prices have fallen, nowadays quality of the product and quality of the generated light became the major differentiators. In terms of quality, so far LED product lifetime was considered through LEDs’ luminous flux maintenance over their lifetime; color maintenance is being considered now as an additional descriptor of LED ageing. Present multi-domain LED models do not count with ageing effects and so far there is no standard way of measuring and modelling color maintenance. Furthermore, parameters of existing multi-domain LED models may also serve as ageing indicators and besides LM-80 standard ageing conditions other conditions may also be considered to activate different failure modes of LEDs.

Tasks of the PhD student:
The research is closely related to a national R&D project titled “Research for new Ageing Indicators of LEDs” and to a foreseen continuation project of the DELPHI4LED EU H2020 ECSEL project (delphi4LED.org). The task of the student will be designing and setting up new experiments to study different LED ageing mechanisms (new aging conditions and methods of measuring changes of LEDs’ characteristics). Besides the experimental work the PhD student is expected to carry out research for describing LEDs’ temporal changes and incorporating these models into LED multi-domain models, either on LED chip level or on LED package level.
