Description of the research topic:

The development of effective drug-delivery systems is a popular topic in todays’ pharmaceutical or nanomedicine-motivated research. The micro- or nanoencapsulation of a pharmaceutical ingredient is a promising a widely used way of drug formulation technology enabling several interesting novel pharmaceutical delivery concepts. In controlled drug release applications, encapsulation enhances and prolongs the effectiveness of active ingredients. Synthetic or natural (bio)polymers are extensively explored for drug delivery and other medical applications. The most widely used biopolymers are poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and their co-polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA); poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG); collagen; gelatin; alginate, chitosan as well as the hyaluronic acid with different molecular weight and viscosity for (bio)polymer hydrogel network preparation.
The aim of the doctoral research program is to design, synthesize and characterize several types of colloidal polymer-based (mostly PLA, PLGA, hyaluronic acid) controlled drug release and targeted drug delivery nanoparticles using different types of drugs as model molecules like neuroactive and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The detailed study of the experimental conditions (type of polymer, temperature, solvent, stabilizing agent) on the structure as well as the encapsulation efficiency and the drug release of drug-containing nanoparticles has been carried out.
