Description of the research topic:
There is an emerging need in agriculture for chemical-free production, resulting in the increase of interest for the possibilities of biological control. Several representatives of bacteria are suitable for the biocontrol of moulds known as plant pathogens or pests of cultivated mushrooms, including rod-shaped, endospore-forming Gram-positive bacteria from the genus Bacillus with the ability of antimicrobial peptide production, or the members of the Gram-negative genus Pseudomonas with the ability to produce antibiotics and siderophores. Bacteria with biocontrol potential are exerting their antagonistic action towards filamentous fungi primarily via competition and antibiosis. The topic covers the selection, identification and characterization of bacterial strains potentially applicable against moulds, as well as the investigation of their interactions with the target organisms.
