Description of the research topic:

A core question of social science is how collective action is organised and institutionalised. What are the conditions that are favourable for the self-organisation of social groups? What is the role of ‘institutional entrepreneurs’ in moving self-organisation forward? If self-organisation succeeds, what are its institutional design principles? Elinor Ostrom’s research on the self-governance of natural common-pool resources provides the theoretical basis for studying a broad range of collectives from business associations to political lobbies to biotechnological patent pools to community gardens, and beyond.
