Description of the research topic:

Theory of biological diversity should account for competition, driving adaptive evolution, as well as for coexistence of several variants/species. The relationship between competition and coexistence is especially relevant for speciation theory and for understanding high diversity ecosystems. It has become widely accepted by now that speciation is usually driven by divergent selection, i.e. attraction by two different opportunities for adaptation (two ecological niches) pull the the population apart. Such process is impossible on a fixed fitness landscape, where the direction of selection is simply determined by the fitness gradient. Niche-based approaches, as opposed to neutral theory, gain traction in study of diverse ecosystems also. The key issue of understanding diversity is incorporation of the ecological stabilizing feedbacks into evolutionary theory, which makes the fitness landscape evolving also. The new adaptational opportunities emerge, as a consequence of the evolution of the landscape. The PhD student will develop and analyse mathematical models within this framework.
