Description of the research topic:
One of the key elements of successful regional development is the optimal use of local resources. The proliferation of renewable energy technologies from the 2000s has made it possible to exploit certain natural resources for a wider energy utilization. The topic has become the focus of interest, domestic and foreign positive examples have been noticed by local communities. These developments contribute to the achievement of environmental objectives and to the cheaper and safer energy supply. In addition to the traditional actors in the sector, local governments, NGOs and the general public were involved in energy production. Rural areas, with their low population density and their relative wealth in natural resources, often offer very favourable conditions to serve as a venue for these investments. On the basis of the local economic development aspects, we can consider it positive that the internal resources connected to the region are more efficiently utilized. In practice, however, the following requirements raise important questions about investments: locally available financial resources, expertise, adequate number of consumers. Renewable energy sources have a potentially significant role to play in rural development. This is partly explained by their rapid spatial spread in recent decades. However, their real regional development role may vary widely between countries and regions with different levels of development and the objectives to be achieved can be completely different.
