Description of the research topic:

The aim of our research is to investigate the role of the serotonergic system in the aging process. The Bdelloid rotifers (Philodina acuticornis, Adineta vaga; phylum Rotifera) are well-known and validated in vivo aging models. These microscopic invertebrates have a complex nervous system mainly based on the serotonergic transmission; however, all other classic neurotransmitters are detectable in them. Based on our knowledge, there were no previous publications about the direct impact of serotonergic system on lifespan in academic literature; however, we have preliminary data supporting this relation. The correlation between the serotonergic system and longevity may have potential human relevance.
