Description of the research topic:
Nanoparticles are promising new systems to increase drug delivery to brain. In our experiments we will decorate the surface of nanoparticles with ligands targeting solute carriers (SLC) transporting nutrients across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). These SLCs will bind the ligands and thus help the transfer of the nanoparticles or their cargo across the BBB to the brain. No study has been done so far on nanoparticles targeted with multiple ligands targeting different SLCs at the BBB. Therefore, our aim is to select the best combination of SLC ligands and thus prepare, optimize and test BBB-selective nanoparticles with unique multiple ligand pattern.
