Description of the research topic:

Self-management of diabetes and hypertension is crucial in controlling blood sugar level and pressure. However, often patients are unable to adhere to treatment guidelines either because of lack of adequate knowledge on self-management or lack of incentive/cues to adhere to guidelines and healthy lifestyle behaviors. Mobile phones have now formed an integral part in our daily lives and therefore hold a great promise in self-management of health conditions by patients. There are however, mixed findings on the efficacy of a growing mobile health (mHEALTH) field and its impact on health of users. The aim the proposed study is to determine if the use of a mobile phone–based self-management system could improve glycemic and blood pressure control, self-management, and health-related quality of life compared with usual care.
