Description of the research topic:

Integrated optical devices are built on a small platform and have a network of active and passive optical parts, connected with optical waveguides. The optical elements modify the light propagating via the optical waveguides and eventually it arrives to the outlet. Earlier, we have demonstrated that it is possible to create a working integrated optical light driven light switch, utilizing a biofilm as an active optical material. Appropriate biofilms have more useful properties than the solid or crystallic materials (for example semiconductors) that nowadays are in use. It is well known that the CPU of a computer is basically a network of many logical gates, connected. Such a gate consists of switches that can be driven (switched) by an other one. Utilizing the really great properties of the biofilms that are applied, it is possible to use our light driven light switches to make logical gates that can eventually be utilized as building blocks for optical computers. The PhD student will perform both experimental and theoretical, research work related to this project.
