Description of the research topic:

In situations where soft soils prevent standard approaches to foundations design such as piles or deep excavations, a new alternative has emerged: rigid inclusions. Rigid inclusions have already been installed on various construction projects, however a rigorous treatment of their behavior has not been offered. The objective of this research is to review past attempts at analyzing rigid inclusions, evaluate performance of construction projects, and offer a more comprehensive model of rigid inclusions within the perspective of finite element methods.

The study may include laboratory testing of fundamental rigid element behavior (reduced scale), various possible materials for use as rigid elements, and examination of published and unpublished field performance of rigid elements.

While the research will emphasize finite element and numerical methods, analytical and empirical approaches will be examined as well as an aid to preliminary design and decision making concerning the use of rigid inclusions as a possible solution.
