Description of the research topic:

Mutation testing is an efficient method for the assessment and improvement of the quality of existing test suites. Mutants are randomly generated, artificially injected faults in the source code, for which the test suite needs to be enhanced to be able to detect them, and hence improve its general fault detection capability. One of the difficulties in mutation testing is the presence of the equivalent mutants, which are code fragments that are syntactically different but functionally equivalent to the original code. Tests cannot be created for equivalent mutants, so they can distort the efficiency of the technique. Detection of equivalent mutants is not possible in the general case, so heuristic approaches are required, which can be used to predict their probable occurrences. The topic of the proposal is the research of such heuristic methods.
