Description of the research topic:

Yarrowia lipolytica is an excellent example of a microorganism with multiple biotechnological applications. This nonconventional, aerobic, dimorphic yeast can usually be found in environments containing hydrophobic substrates, rich in alkanes and fats. Additionally, it has GRAS status (generally recognised as safe) as well as it was reported to grow well on many agricultural cheap substrates and wastes. Despite it may have a very big biotechnological potential waiting for exploitation, many scientific and technological information about this yeast still lack in the literature. In the last decade, numbers of species and strains of Yarrowia genus were selected and identified by National Collection of Agricultural and Industrial Microorganisms, Budapest, Hungary. This PhD research will focus on screening strains as well as study of the growth and synthesis of some metabolites (organic acids, aromas and carotenoids) by Yarrowia lipolytica using some cakes such as linseed cake, sunflower seed cake, rapeseed cake etc.
