Description of the research topic:

The in-vivo real time intraoperative monitoring of the microcirculation allows us to assess and predict the effect of the surgical intervention on the organ. This may open new dimensions in reconstructive surgery as the viability of new, non-conventional surgical procedures can be tested. We successfully used this technique to design a new technique for intestinal lengthening in short bowel syndrome the Spiral Intestinal Lengthening and Tailoring (SILT), which has been translated to the clinical practice. This project is focusing on new operative techniques for safer bladder augmentation when the mesentery is short and aiming for mucus free bladder augmentation with longer and better continent cutaneous urinary diversions (catheterisable urinary stoma).
