Thesis topic proposal

Chemical syntheses of novel S- and/or Se- containing carbohydrates designed for protein binding and potential antiparasitic activity

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Debrecen
chemistry
Doctoral School of Chemistry

Thesis supervisor: Tünde Zita Tóthné Dr. Illyés
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Debreceni Egyetem, Szerves Kémiai Tanszék Kémiai Épület
Abbreviation of location of studies: E20

Description of the research topic:

The proposed research topic is based on the immense importance of molecular recognition between glycans and proteins in pathological processes, as well as on the need to search for molecules against parasites involved in neglected tropical diseases. Based on previous results in our group the research plan will include a complex, synergistic approach, involving chemical syntheses, structure-activity studies and parasitological tests.
The main responsibility of the PhD student will be to synthesize novel S- and/or Se- containing carbohydrates/glycoconjugates designed for binding to lectins or enzymes, such as phosphatases; isolation/purification and characterization of the reaction products using an array of up to date separation and structure determination techniques (NMR, MS, X-ray).
She/he will also be involved in testing the protein-binding, inhibitory (or activation) potential of the molecules using biophysical (such as ITC, SPR) and spectroscopic techniques with an emphasis on advanced NMR methodology.
A fully equipped lab for synthetic chemistry as well as comprehensive instrumentation facilities will be available to conduct PhD research work efficiently.
