Description of the research topic:
The goal of the PhD project is to develop process and data mining algorithms, which will enable financial systems to significantly optimize their internal processes on one hand, while maintaining the current information security posture in the financial environment on the other hand, e.g. the protection of personally identifiable information. The goal of the project is to prove that (1) the internal processes in financial systems are sub-optimal, (2) the optimization of those processes is possible, and (3) optimizing the processes will allow financial systems to have measurable cost savings. In the first phase of the project the internal processes and data flows in financial systems will be mapped. The goal of the second phase is to analyze the processes and data flows and identify their sub-optimal elements, e.g. bottlenecks. In the next, third phase of the PhD project the student will propose solutions which can optimize the identified sub-optimal processes. The solutions will be measurable and formally proven, e.g. calculated percentage of cost savings if the solution is applied. The results of this research will be applicable in the context of the following identified processes: (1) bottlenecks in the internal processes, (2) processes which require the participation of too many or too few parties, e.g. the participation of one division leader might be sufficient instead of the current three, (3) flows involving high (financial) risk, as well as (4) processes which usually involve long delays and the identification of the causes of those delays.
