Description of the research topic:

Soil and other granular assemblies interact with the tools and machines used to manipulate it. This interaction causes the load of the tools and of the granular material. The practicing engineer has the task of control this mechanical interaction. To control it, we have to be able to describe the mechanical processes governing it. Classical continuum based description
methods fail to meet the requirements arising from the engineering practice. We suppose that to be able to gain a more adequate model of the granular material- solid body interaction problem we have to explicitly simulate individual particles of the granular assembly (Lagrangian description). The PhD candidate has to develop a proper calibration method for the determination of micromechanical parameters of agricultural granular materials and for soil, and to substantiate a Lagrangian description based proper mechanical model of the rigid body – granular assembly interaction.
