Description of the research topic:

In the current project we aim to establish a novel strain collection of pathogenic and commensalist E. coli from cattle and poultry, and to perform genetic and pathogenetic characterisation of the fresh isolates. One of the main aim is to isolate and characterize zoonotic pathogens first of all Shiga toxin producing novel E. coli (STEC) strains. We also aim to isolate and characterise bacteriophages from the same samples. We will determine the genome sequence of characteristic pathogenic and zoonotic strains, and those of lytic bacteriophages. An important task is to investigate the evolutionary and pathogenetic role of prophages (integrated phages) in the bacterial genomes. Exploring the biocontrol potential of the isolated lytic phages is also part of the PhD project.
