Search for New Physics with the CMS detector at the LHC

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest
physics
Doctoral School of Physics

Thesis supervisor: Gabriella Pásztor
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Science, Institute of Physics (with visits to CERN, Geneva, Switzerland)
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELTE

Description of the research topic:

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics leaves open several theoretical and observational problems – such as the existence of dark matter - that suggest the existence of a more fundamental theory hidden behind it. Search for new phenomena such as the appearance of new heavy particles at the TeV energy scale predicted by extensions of the SM - for example by adding supersymmetry or extra spatial dimensions to the model – are thus in the focus of the proposed research. The student will use the proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built.

Required language skills: English (fluent)
Further requirements:
Computer programming (preferably C++, python), basic knowledge of particle physics.
Student will join the MTA-ELTE Lendület Particle and Nuclear Physics Group at ELTE and travel regularly to the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in Geneva, Switzerland.

Number of students who can be accepted: 2

Deadline for application: 2018-05-31
