Description of the research topic:

Problem statement
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are broadly used today in a large field of applications. Their applicability in different fields is impeded by the fact that different LED manufacturers characterise their products differently, and the data they provide in the data sheets are insufficient to enable proper high level design. To overcome these issues a large group of the largest European LED user companies have initiated a European research project (DELPHI4LED, EU-H2020) that targets to elaborate and standardize measurement and characterization methods to describe the complex operation of the LEDs and contain sufficient information to enable correct electrical, thermal and photonic design with these LEDs.

Tasks of the PhD student:
To elaborate and conduct measurements that may provide the basis of multi physics modelling of the LED samples selected by the members of the DELPHI4LED consortium.. The measurement methodologies have to be appropriate to be later standardized and provide all the data for multi-physics modelling with which LED manufacturers should describe their products. Modelling methods and models have to be elaborated for the appropriate multi-physical description of LEDs, that later on can be used by LED manufacturers to completely characterise their products for their potential users and are also appropriate to be standardized.
The work is closely connected to the DELPHI4LED EY H2020 ECSEL project.
