Description of the research topic:

Kernel bypass networking can provide high performance networking by avoiding the overhead of the operating system kernel networking stack. High performance networking is important for certain specialized applications, such as distributed storage systems, software middle¬boxes or Network Function Virtualization. These applications require low latency, high bandwidth and low CPU overhead if possible. Data center operators adopt technologies, for example RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) or DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit), etc. that provide kernel bypass methods because more and more of such applications are running on cloud platforms. The combination of the virtualization technologies in cloud platforms and kernel bypass networking will play a key role in the future.
Open problems:
• Developing measurement methodologies for performance evaluation of kernel bypass networking technologies, optimizing and improving the performance
• Evaluating the applicability of kernel bypass networking in different use­cases
• Analyzing the tradeoffs between CPU overhead and network performance
• Analyzing the impact on cloud systems and applications using virtualization and kernel bypass networking combined

Required language skills: good written english
Further requirements: 
• strong knowledge in cloud and networking technologies
• experience in computer programming
