Description of the research topic:
According to our hypothesis, different adenovirus lineages, classified as virus genera, have coevolved with mammals, birds, squamate reptiles and turtles. Interestingly, birds might harbor representatives of three divergent adenovirus lineages. Besides their own adenoviruses (genus Aviadenovirus), members of two additional genera (Atadenovirus and Siadenovirus) occur in birds. We suppose that these viruses have switched hosts either from squamates reptiles, or some other, yet unknown host. Host switches from squamates to ruminants, and between mammalian species have also been identified. Adenoviruses in a novel host can be recognized by their elevated pathogenicity. The purpose of the project is to search for novel adenoviruses in different animals. After partial or full sequencing, comparative studies will be carried out.
