Description of the research topic:

There is no doubt that the molecular-level mechanisms of physiological processes, diseases (e.g. cancer) require system-level understanding. It is surprising, that the cells consist of thousands of lipids, and their concentration from bulk structural lipids to minor signalling components covers ca. 5 orders of magnitude difference. Why are there so many lipids? It is known that the cancer cells readjust their lipid metabolism playing a key role in cell division, migration, i.e., in the aggressiveness and metastatic potential of tumours. Moreover, the manipulation of lipid homeostasis has a new therapeutic potential. In order to uncover the mystery of the communication of the tumour and the surrounding stromal cell, we are planning experiments on cell cultures, animal models and human tumour tissue using up-to-date mass spectrometry-based lipidomics and lipid imaging, biochemical and molecular biological tools.
