Location of studies (in Hungarian): HAS Biological Research Centre, Institute of Biophysics
Abbreviation of location of studies: SZBK

Description of the research topic:

Nervous tissue differs substantially from other tissues of the body. Despite high nutrient consumption, the nervous system lacks energy stores. Passage of solutes and immune cells through the blood vessel walls into the tissue is strongly obstructed and strictly regulated. Furthermore, nervous tissue lacks a classical lymphatic system.
Balancing blood circulation in order to supply sufficient nutrients, providing lymphatic circulation and regulation of transport between nervous tissue and blood circulation falls to the concerted function of neurovascular unit.
Cells composing the neurovascular unit (such as endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, etc.) function differently in vitro compared to in vivo, therefore these studies will be performed using intravital two-photon microscopy.
The primary goal is to elucidate the role of pericytes residing in capillary walls in local brain circulation.
