Description of the research topic:
Natural areas carry multiple functions from food to fuelwood production, from hiking to hunting. In those areas, land users are facing continuous conflicts related to nature conservation, forestry, wildlife management, hunting, hiking, technical sports etc. The impact of ungulates are amongst the most contradictory conflicts. The main purpose of this research is to describe the most important effects of a common, intensively spreading game species, the wild boar, on the natural environment. The research aims to identify some basic disturbing and regulatory effects of this ungulate species and determine its real impact on the naturalness and biodiversity of the studied areas. The primary approach is conducting field research on the impact of wild boar rooting on 1) soil nutrients and compaction, 2) seed bank composition, 3) herbaceous and woody vegetation composition. Monitoring different measurable bio-indicators we will show evidence on favorable and non-favorable effects of wild boar on their natural environment. Our results could help initiate a common thinking among the different interest groups and decrease their conflicts, especially in valuable protected habitats.
