Description of the research topic:

The use of laser tweezer or optical tweezer is getting widespread in single cell studies. It provides a non-invasive tool for the manipulation or actuiation of the cells or for initiating interaction between cells or cells and artificial micrometer-sized objects. Its advanced version, that uses multiple trapping points is called holographic optical tweezers; it can be used, for instance to trap and actuate artifdicial 3D micro objects with 6 degrees of freedom. When a cell is attached to such an optically manipulated object, the actuation of the cell can be achieved without its irradiation damage with the very intense focused trapping laser beam. The research focuses on the interaction between two of such indirectly trapped cells or between a trapped cell and a cultured cell layer. The advantages of the method are the exact timing of the interaction, multi-view fluorescence observation, the possibility to measure interaction forces and to initiate interaction between cells with any desired orientation.
