Description of the research topic:

The principal aim is to analyze the epidemiology of corneal disorders (infections, degenerations, and dystrophies). Moreover, to reveal structural and pathophysiologic characteristics of certain diseases with the application of modern imaging diagnostic tools (corneal topography, tomography, confocal and specular microscopy, optical coherence tomography). Finally, morphological, immunohistochemical characterization of surgically excised corneas, to study cell-extracellular matrix junctions, revealing possible new etiologic factors.
